The WW1 battlefields of Gallipoli are situated about 15 kms from anakkale in Turkey. Tours of the battlefields depart daily from ANZAC House Youth Hostel in anakkale.

Tours can be arranged through Hassle Free Travel Agency or at ANZAC House Youth Hostel.

B.I.T., now in its 10th year of running Gallipoli tours, has a time proven record as the No. 1 travel agency when it comes to Gallipoli.

The daily tour is as follows :-

(Shown every evening at ANZAC House Youth Hostel)
19:00 4-Corners documentary 'Fatal Shore', gives an overview of the campaign and contains interviews with veterans from Australia, New Zealand, Britain and Turkey.

21:00 The movie 'Gallipoli', an Australian production, directed by Peter Weir and starring Mel Gibson, gives an insight into the mentality of those that enlisted in 1915 and gives the viewer an idea of conditions at the time. It culminates in the famous charge by the 10th Australian Light Horse, which took place at The Nek as a part of the August offensive.

On the following day the tour departs from ANZAC House Youth Hostel and proceeds by ferry across the part of the Dardenelles known as the Narrows. So named because it is the narrowest part of the Dardenelles, less then a kilometre across. The ferry pulls in at the small fishing village of Kilitbahir, which means 'lock of the sea'. Kilitbahir is known for its fort built in 1453 by 'Mehmet II the Conqueror' as a part of his successful siege of Constantinopole, which he then renamed to Istanbul. Once in Kilitbahir the guide gives an explanation of the naval battle that took place in the Dardenelles prior to the army landings. The tour meets our air-conditioned tour bus and proceeds to the battlefield area and visits:-
  • Kabatepe Museum which contains relics from the campaign including original diary extracts and letters.
  • Brighton beach, the intended landing place, lunch and swimming weather permitting.
  • Beach cemetery on the southern tip of ANZAC Cove, the landing place of the first wave of Australian and New Zealand troops and home to up to 30,000 troops during the campaign. John Simpson Kirkpatrick of "Simpson and his donkey" fame is buried in this cemetery.
  • Ari Burnu cemetery on the northern tip of ANZAC Cove, where the Dawn service is held each ANZAC Day.
  • Lone Pine Australian Memorial, site of the successful attack and capture of Turkish trenches by the Australians during the August offensive.
  • Johnston's Jolly where you'll visit original Allied and Turkish trenches and tunnels.
  • The Nek site of the famous Light Horse charge depicted in the 'Gallipoli' movie.
  • Chunuk Bair New Zealand Memorial, captured by the New Zealanders during the August offensive, highest point captured during the entire campaign.

The duration of the tour is a approximately 6 hours, but is flexible and depends on the weather, whether or not swimming took place and the size of the group. The tour returns to ANZAC House Youth Hostel, anakkale, but those wishing to continue onto Istanbul immediately after the tour can arrange this through the guide.
